Lunch at World Peace Cafe

After a hectic morning at work, if you head on to the World Peace Cafe for lunch at Wanchai, you'll be surrounded by a sense of calm.

Not that this place is quiet, you usually have to book in advance to secure seats, but the environment has a positive energy around it.

Perhaps it has to do with the waiters and waitresses who are all volunteers, despite being busy shuttling around tables to take orders and serve food, they are still quite friendly.

World Peace doesn't offer a wide variety of food you can choose from, just three sets - A, B and C but it does have a good range of Western and Asian fusion.

As you can tell from the pictures, the dishes score points for its presentation but also the quality.

An average lunch set costs close to $100, which comes with a drink and an appetizer.

I like to round off my meal with a cup of organic peppermint tea or cupuccino - World Peace Style.

Power lunch @ Cafe O

I was told that the Cafe O on Queens Rd Central is a good place to conduct your meetings since it has 2 levels and obviously quieter upstairs.

Cafe O has a wide range of European food from your usual sandwiches, salads to metre long pizzas.

What I like about this place is it has a good range of vegetarian options particularly for pizzas or even the set meal offers.

I've yet to try its lasagne but I enjoyed the calzone and as you can see in the picture below, the cafe was offering a wheat base pizza special.

I opted for the pumpkin and spinach toppings and it was filling without making me feel too sleepy to work later.

The thin, crispy crust helps and knowing that it's made of wheat flour makes me feel less guilty indulging in such a big portion.

Do give Cafe O a try if you want a healthy lunch fix.

Scrambled eggs @ Australia Dairy Company

It's not a myth that breakfast is an important meal of the day and there have been many studies to prove this, some even claiming that kids who eat their breakfasts perform better in school.

But what we eat for breakfast is interesting too and varies in different places. In Hong Kong, local cha chaan tengs usually serve up chow mien, cheong fun (flat rice sheets), congee or instant noodles.

There's been quite a number of positive reviews about the Australia Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司 with some reviews say even those from Hong Kong island would travel to Kowloon -Jordan just to eat here.

I decided to make a trip with my sister and we ordered the signature scrambled eggs set that comes with two pieces of toast and a cup of warm Horlicks.

The waiters in white uniforms are very efficient - quick to take your orders and serve up your food.

I sprinkled a generous portion of pepper on the scrambled eggs, found it a little bit salty but overall good enough that it makes me crave for more. The toast was soft and fluffy with a thin layer of butter on each of the slices.

There's no lounging around at this place though, once you finish your food, you are expected to leave as people keep streaming in.

Would love to go there again and for my friends from overseas who want an authentic breakfast, I'll be sure to recommend this place to them.

Salad Buffet @ JW Marriott

Salads can be eaten as a meal on its own and it's becoming popular to create your own salads by choosing the ingredients you like than be forced to choose from the limited salad varieties i.e. ceasar salad.

If you like to pamper yourself with a good salad meal, you could go to JW Marriott for its salad lunch buffet. The hotel also offers noodle and dessert buffet and if you are feeling famished, you could always opt for all three.

I like the experience of having control over what I eat from choosing and seeing how it's made. Once you are settled and have your seat, proceed to the salad bar and grab a bowl - it's huge (as big as your face and deep too) then pick the ingredients you like, some ingredients I love include kidney beans, spinach leaves, corn, chick peas, sun-dried tomatoes and parmesan cheese.

When your bowl is reasonably filled with all the ingredients you like, you surrender it to the 'tosser' who will ask you which salad dressing you want (I like to choose at least 2 different dressing) before pouring it into a metal bowl and mixing your creation into a delicious salad feast.

Viola! You can now dig into your salad creation. I love gorging into my giant bowl of salad.

Simply Life

It's Sunday and you want to chill out somewhere for brunch. Running out of ideas?

Head to Festival Walk @ Kowloon Bay and check out the brunch menus at Simply Life Bakery Cafe.

I ordered a brunch set that includes mushroom soup and egg florentine. The portion is relatively big but not too much that you can't finish when you are combining two meals.

The food is fresh and tasty but the only gripe I have is that it gets crowded quickly. Meaning you need to get there before 1230pm so you don't have to wait long to get a seat. But you can't really hang around as a long queue usually form outside quickly and not nice if you're hogging your seats.

My strategy is to eat slowly and enjoy every bite of my food. And that's what I call - Simply Life.

Buddha Hut

If you want a vegetarian version of the likes of local fast food chains such as Fairwood or Cafe De Coral, there's just one such restaurant located near Kowloon Bay MTR station called Buddha Hut.

I decided to make my way there one afternoon and took my friend, Jessie along. We ordered cold buckwheat noodles sprinkled with sesame seeds on top and gravy that comes separately, when added gives the dish a refreshing taste.
The chicken satay dipped in peanut sauce is not too spicy yet rich enough to go well with the tangy texture of the veggie meat.
My all time favourite is the laksa but I reckon it would have tasted more 'authentic' if served with thick vermicelli instead.

This is definitely a good place to get delicious vegetarian food at reasonable prices.

For vegetarians who are put off by the veggie-unfriendly menus at the usual fast food restaurants, Buddha Hut is like an oasis where your challenge is to have such a wide variety of dishes from Chinese to Western cusines to choose from.

After a bit of shopping, I couldn't stop myself from returning to grab a mushroom pie for a snack before heading home.
